We couldn't have planned it better if we tried. Turns out we are in Gubbio on Feast Day. A day to honor St. Francis the Patron Saint of Animals. This was at one time a national holiday. Early this morning as we walked out of this ancient city our path took us by his statue and a small church named in his honor. The sun low with dew still hanging from his chin, it was a spectacular scene. We met an artist just coming out of the tiny church situated on the corner of a park. He told us of his son, named Francis who had died in a car accident 5 years ago. He goes to the church each morning to start his day. He also told us we would see some of his artwork as we walked along the path. We found at least one of his pieces, a water scene of St Francis painted just above a water fountain. We walked out of town and then up into the hills looking north to find even more hilltop beyond those we could see previously. Yesterday's tour of the city took us up an incredible ride in a standing basket to the top of a mountain for a view of the city. It was rather like a ski lift only you stood in a basket that you had to jump in and out of as it passed by.
Our hike today cut short by chance our argurtismo, where we are spending the night, happened to be on the path before reaching Biscina. This place is gorgeous with hammocks and great views. I know Scott will love it too bad it will be dark by the time he gets here. They are going to make us dinner and breakfast. Sonja immediately got swarmed with bees when checking out the place, four bee stings, two on the face.
I was not planning on walking today. I felt weak and sure my feet needed a break but happily woke at 5 feeling fantastic and ready to hit the road. It was another perfect day, great weather, awesome views and a whole lot of peace.
